This 17th-century gilt bronze figural grouping depicts the moment when Jesus was whipped prior to his crucifixion. With commanding physique, the heroic yet complicit Jesus is in contrast to his attacker’s active posture, twisting and turning as they prepare to strike him again with their (missing) flails.
