“These works remind me of flowers on a casket.”
—Doris Ricks, Vice President of the Lawrence Branch of the NAACP

Emmett Till grew up in Chicago, a progressive city with a growing Black population. Before a trip in 1955 to visit family in Mississippi, Emmett’s mother warned him that race relations were more tense in the South. During the visit, Emmett whistled at a white woman and returned to Chicago in a casket. Over 100,000 people attended his funeral and witnessed his beaten body in the open
casket that his mother insisted on.
