Morgan marks the appearance of the independent artist-potter who worked outside the confines of industry in the later 19th century. Having made stained glass under Arts and Crafts leader William Morris, De Morgan launched a revival of Hispano-Moresque lusterware, using a derivation of those techniques to produce this tile. Sales of these tiles kept the studio in business, and they surrounded the fireplaces of new upper-middle-class suburban homes in London.
