Body Shadow, Generated is a digital work by aaajiao that analyzes acupuncture, an ancient component of traditional Chinese medicine, by using fractal theory and algorithmic software. Using a computer algorithm, aaajiao scanned his lower leg to chart the location of acupuncture points known as meridians. The meridian system consists of pathways in the body through which the vital energy qi flows. The resulting digital print displays a three-dimensional rendering of the artist’s calf and foot mapped with corresponding meridian points. After mapping his leg, aaajiao commissioned a tattoo artist to permanently mark the points, an act that is documented in an accompanying documentary video.
