This painting exemplifies art populaire, a 20th-century artistic genre that developed in the urban hubs of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Using the bold colors, dense scenes, and realistic style that characterizes art populaire, Mouscou makes a strong political statement about doomed relations between Africa and the West through the metaphor of physical handicap. Despite increasing recognition of art populaire as an important emerging tradition within art historical circles (and its prominence on the global art market), the DRC’s own Académie des Beaux-Arts (Academy of Fine Arts) refuses to display such works because they do not conform to the academic standards of its training program.
