Stonehouse’s image features three alien-like figures who emerge from transparent containers against an indistinct, inky background. Each of their faces display bizarre and monstrous features, such as multiple eyes and ears, horns on their heads, and oddly shaped mouths and noses. The way in which Stonehouse utilized the aquatint printing technique, which is a type of etching that produces shaded values and an inky wash effect, strengthens the strangeness and otherness of the peculiar heads represented in the image.
