U Kya Bu received this medal in 1952 to acknowledge his role as an original participant of the Panglong Agreement (1947), which effectively ended British colonial rule and formed the independent Union of Burma. U Kya Bu was also a member of the first Burmese delegation to the United Nations in 1951, and was the only member to be invited for tea by then First Lady of the United States Eleanor Roosevelt.
