St. Pierre Toussaint was originally a farmer in Haiti and did not start painting until 1972. He often sold his paintings by the roadside to tourists. His work celebrated joy and color in nature and natural forms. The circular shape of this painting mirrors the organic movement of the foliage. While many of Toussaint’s paintings have shapes outlined in dark colors, the contrast of this painting comes from the vibrant red bouncing between shades of blueish green.
