In contrast to the vibrancy of the flowers and background, the birds and butterflies (or moths) in this painting are portrayed in shades of grey and white, a reminder of the cycle of life and death. The unique winding shape of the vase handle and its banded colors may be a reference to the rainbow snake Aydia-Weddo, the Vodou spirit of fertility, rainbows, wind, water, fire, and snakes.
