This lush painting is a celebration of life and renewal. Evoking the visual elements of the story of Lady Godiva, a nude woman rides a horse through the Haitian countryside with her hair flowing behind her. A large fruit-bearing tree with flowers is nestled at the base of the crops that line the backdrop and surround the woman. Animals of all types graze on the abundance of vegetation while a Haitian boy washes himself in the stream. This scene of beauty and bounty is a typical subject for Max Gerbier, who was born in Milot, Haiti, and was proud of his homeland.
