This decorative cloth with five fish evokes a rich history of textile production and exchange. An example of resist-dye techniques that have circulated in West Africa, such cloths serve many functions from funerary practices or girls’ initiations to tourist items like this one. Like the nearby woven food cover with a fish in the Earth section, this work was purchased in Kano, a major commercial center in northern Nigeria known for its dye industry and textile trade.
