Texas-based artist Candace Hicks reconstructs the familiar format of the composition notebook in fabric and thread. Hicks uses her handmade versions as repositories for personal notes, ideas, and musings, which often focus on a single word or phrase. In her work “This” from the series “Common Threads,” Hicks stitches together imagery and language from her memories into sequences of seemingly unrelated and stream-of-consciousness thoughts about the word “this.” Select the image above and swipe through the pages of Hicks’s book to follow her whimsical narrative thread.
