While Queen Mother heads were usually ordered cast by the Oba to honor the living personnage, the heads of the Oba themselves were commemorative of past rulers. There were set up on altars, tusks inserted into their tops in some cases, and the current Oba would thus worship in the presence of his predecessors' images.
