These beaded Chokwe items were collected by University of Kansas alumnus Claude Brown, who traveled to what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the early 1900s as a mining engineer. Extensive mining and natural resource extraction in the region have since contributed to widespread environmental degradation, human rights abuses, and political instability.
