Archive label for Palmer collection exhibit, date unknown:
The tribal emblem of the Senufo was the bird, and thus it usually played some part in the their rituals. Its representation was simplified, while the beak and outstretched wings were accentuated as the dominate characteristics of "birdness." Bird depictions ornamented masks, and bird figures were fastened directly to the head, as this example may have been.
