During his nearly seventy year career, Hokusai produced a tremendous number of ukiyo-e prints and paintings, surimono, and illustrated books. Among the most popular of all his works, however, were his brief sketches called manga, a term that translates as "random sketches," "cartoons," or "sketches from life." Whether he is depicting landscape vistas as seen here, or animals, plants, or people, his deft lines animate the subjects and capture their essence completely, despite the abbreviated treatment. Hokusai's sketches were compiled i nfifteen volumes, the first published to great acclaim in 1814, and the last published in 1878, twenty-nine years after his death.
