Throughout his prolific career as a sculptor of wood, Cecil Carstenson taught at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, conducted workshops on carving and technique, and wrote the book The Craft and Creation of Wood Sculpture. This stylized bust captures the iconic short-cropped hair of Joan of Arc (1412–1431), heroine of the French during the Hundred Years’ War.
