George M. Kren was born in Linz, Austria, escaping in 1939 with his sister to England as part of the Kindertransport, a British movement to help Jewish children escape the Nazi onslaught. Kren’s parents also escaped, and a year later he and his sister were reunited with them in New York City. Kren became an historian of the Holocaust who pioneered psychoanalytical theory in his scholarship. He joined the faculty at Kansas State University in 1965 and retired in 2000. A lifelong interest in photography led Kren to begin a new project in 1973 photographing artists and other individuals with connections to the arts. He made connections with these individuals through his wife, Margo,
professor of art at Kansas State University.
