Hasui traveled the length and breadth of Japan, sketching both famous and obscure places to be used later as print designs. In this work, he probably depicts the Buddhist temple complex of Rinnoji in Nikkō, a town about 80 miles north of Tokyo. True to his devotion to Western realism, he gives the buildings a weight and solidity not found in ukiyo-e.
