This painting depicts Big Rock, a famous bluff in Little Rock, Arkansas. Fern Knecht painted the morning sunlight as it plays across the many colors and textures created by a mixture of sandstone, shale, and red clay. This painting captures a singular moment in time, drawing the audience to consider the ever-changing qualities of the natural world. Knecht grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, and spent time in Little Rock, where she taught art classes and painted murals for public institutions.
