The person in this portrait is very important to the Spencer Museum of Art. By the late 1960s, KU’s art museum had outgrown its original building. Helen Foresman Spencer donated money to help build the museum we have today. To honor Helen Foresman Spencer and her efforts, the Spencer Museum of Art was named after her.

In this painting, Mrs. Spencer sits on an elegant bench. Her dress looks like it might be made of velvet and she wears a ring with a large green stone. She looks relaxed with a slight smile as she gazes at us.

What do you think her clothes say about her?

What would you include in your portrait that would tell us something about you?
