In Portrait of a Mother and Daughter, the subjects’ fine clothes and jewelry, as well as the size and quality of the portrait itself, reveal their upper-class status. Their serious expressions and the painting’s dark tones provide insight into the social customs of the 1860s. Laura J. Topham donated this portrait in 1974. The painting depicts her grandmother, Laura Jane Thweatt Block, and her mother, Emma Block.
