Originally sculpted as part of a large altar retable, the emphatic movement of the composition was part of a larger narrative setting in a church. The scene depicts the moment when Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane following the feast of the Last Supper. As his disciples drift off to sleep in the foreground an angel appears in the upper corner, granting Jesus strength for the inevitable crucifixion.
