Exhibition Label: “Four Flemish Tapestries,” Dec-2009, Susan Earle
The design for this tapestry was likely based on the artwork of the 17th-century Flemish artist David Teniers the Younger, whose painting, The Deluge, appears in the Spencer’s 17th and 18th Century Gallery. Teniers’ works, particularly his renditions of pastoral themes, were immensely popular among Flemish tapestry weavers during the 17th and early 18th centuries. While most examples are in private collections, similar textiles are housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art and in the Royal Museum of Fine Art, Antwerp.
