In 1938, shortly after moving to New Mexico, Jonson helped form the Transcendental Painting Group in order to broaden public appreciation of non-objective or abstract painting. Throughout his career he remained fascinated by cosmic themes. Writing in 1971, he pondered, “[M]y hope has been that through the intuitive or subconsious act a feeling of the spiritual, rather than the physical, would occur at times.”
