The 19th-century Dutch painter Johannes Bosboom was wellknown for his paintings of church interiors in both oil and watercolor. His watercolors were especially popular with collectors for their ability to conjure light and space through broad strokes of color. Sallie Casey Thayer purchased this watercolor from an exhibition in Kansas City in March 1909, a year after she and her son embarked on a four-month tour of Europe that took them through the Mediterranean, Switzerland, Germany, and Holland. Images such as this watercolor may have served to encourage a sort of imaginary tourism. Thayer sought to bring together an “entire world of art” in her collection, and Bosboom’s bright and spacious perspective through the aisle of the church toward the two small figures standing in the nave provides the viewer with a window into a Dutch church interior.
