Credit line: Projection of a glass lantern slide. Black and white image depicts an interior with a fireplace. There is a painting above the fireplace with a woman descending from a chariot and moving toward a man sitting on the ground. There are sculpted mythological figures on both sides of the painting, one man (Mercury) and one woman (Venus?).

Since its invention in the mid-19th century, the lantern slide has played a pivotal role in the history of projected images. In these glass lantern slides, English artist Frederick Henry Evans captures grand and ornate fireplaces from chateaus across France. After retiring from bookselling in 1898, Evans bought a quarter-plate camera and devoted himself to photography. Evans would spend weeks studying the effects of light at a location.
