Andrew Carnie investigates ways to picture the body through science, touching on topics such as memory, developmental neuroscience, genetic disorders, temporal lobe epilepsy, and aging. For over ten years, Carnie has also been part of Hybrid Bodies, a research project that combines medical, psychological, philosophical, sociological, and artistic perspectives to explore the lived realities of heart transplant recipients and donor families. Carnie was recently able to observe, sketch, and paint human cadavers—including their hearts—in an Amsterdam anatomy laboratory. From these initial pieces, he created watercolors that inspired his ongoing collaborative project Junctures of a Haphazard Kind. The other works on this wall form part of this series and are part of Carnie’s work with the Hybrid Bodies team.
