In 2008, the Spencer Museum of Art commissioned Terry Evans to create a body of work in response to the research of KU’s Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS). CReSIS scientists study the thickness of glaciers in order to estimate the rise of coastal waters under different climate change models. Evans focussed her work on the Jakobshavn Glacier in Greenland, a site of intense CReSIS research activity. For this commission, she had access by air and sea to the glacier and its surrounding regions. Her resulting work conveys the astonishing scale of the landscapes and seascapes, the immense but fragile ecosystems that are under threat, and the transitory beauty of our world.
