2005: Hurricane Katrina hits the Gulf Coast on August 29. The damage the storm causes ranks it among the largest-scale natural disasters in the history of the United States. African American citizens make up a disproportionately large share of the storm’s victims. This quilt illustrates how communities affected by Hurricane Katrina worked together to rebuild their lives and preserve their cultural heritage.
