This round bowl was created by the mother-son team of Maria Martinez and Antonio Martinez, who chose to use his Tewa name Popovi Da, which translates to “Red Fox” in the Tewa language. In addition to creating pottery, Da served in the United States military and was involved as a machinist for the Manhattan Project, a research project that ultimately led to the development of nuclear weapons.
