This illustration depicts a story of the historical Buddha Śākyamuni, in which he miraculously called forth the deity Huiji jingang (穢跡金剛). Although this is not the same deity depicted in Lu Yang’s video work Wrathful King Kong Core, the image illustrates the Buddhist tradition of depicting wrathful, warrior-like figures and underscores the historical grounding of Lu’s work.
