This poster commemorates the Mothers of East Los Angeles, a group of Chicana activists who successfully fought the construction of a prison in their neighborhood in the 1980s. They triumphed through community organizing and holding candlelight vigils over several years until the project was canceled. They also successfully fought off proposals for an oil pipeline and a toxic waste incinerator. By demanding better conditions for their communities, these women were pioneers in the fight against environmental racism.
