This is the most finished of the nine military reconnaissance landscape drawings by Bellanger in the Carlson Collection. All of these drawings have an aerial perspective, in this case taken from an observation tree, as indicated in the subtitle, “Vue Prise de L’Arbre de Niessel” (View taken from the Niessel’s Tree). Niessel undoubtedly refers to Colonel Niessel, who played a commanding role in the battle of Quennevières. Near the center of the drawing another observation tree is identified, “Arbre Observatoire de Chailles” (Observation Tree in the town of Chailles). The Battle of Quennevières took place in June 1915 and caused 7,700 French and 4,000 German casualties in 10 days.
