René Buthaud studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux from 1903 to 1907, and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris until 1913. He concentrated on painting and engraving. On returning to Bordeaux in 1918 after serving in World War I, Buthaud learned glass-making and ceramics. He is best-known for his Art Deco ceramics, which emphasize figural decoration and merge his earlier interest in painting and printmaking with three-dimensional art.
