After visiting his father’s homeland in Iran, German artist Timo Nasseri embarked on a body of work based on the geometric ornamentation of classical Islamic architecture. In particular, Nasseri was captivated by muqarnas, the honeycomb dome and half-dome supports that adorn mosques and madrasas (educational institutions) in the Islamic world. He researched the mathematical principles governing their intricate ornamental system and devised a rhythmic, repetitive drawing technique to induce meditative tranquility. This technique is found in Nasseri’s One and One, an ongoing series of white ink drawings on black paper.
