Kahn immigrated to the United States as a child in 1905 and settled in Peoria, Illinois. Kahn and his wife Eleanor Coen worked for the WPA during the Great Depression in Chicago. Kahn was part of the Chicago Expressionist movement, using expressive color and emotion in his artwork. He taught printmaking at the Art Institute from 1944 to 1959, and at the University of Chicago from 1959 to 1969. He also taught at Escuela Universitaria de Bellas Artes in Mexico, where he set up a print shop that still bears his mark. He continued working in sculpting, painting and printing until he slowed down at age 100, and is known for his late-career weather vanes.
