Toma Rosandić learned the skill of stone-cutting from his father at an early age while growing up in the scenic city of Split located on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. Together with his contemporary Ivan Meštrović (1883–1962) he is considered one of most prominent Croatian (Yugoslavian) sculptors of the 20th century. This bust portrays Jadwiga Dębicki (1902–1977), the wife of the Polish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, who was living in Belgrade when this sculpture was made. Two stamps attached to the underside of the bust reveal that it was displayed in 1938 at the XXI Esposizione Biennale Internazionale d'Arte (21st Venice Biennale).
