A unifying theme of these four pieces is the portrayal of ordinary people and their interactions with nature. In Three fishing boats and two fishermen on open water by Haitian artist Calixte Henry, two fishermen cooperate to lay out nets in shallow water. Henry’s application of paint with razor blades and knives rather than brushes creates subtlety and transparency in color and design.

Man standing by a tree by Haitian artist J. Maisonneuve provides a visual connection between humans and nature. Likewise, the stilt houses and boats depicted in Pe Nyunt Wai’s painting form a serene scene of coexistence.
