Eastwood enjoyed painting barns in the countryside around Lawrence, as seen in this depiction of a view near Pleasant Grove. Barns are iconic symbols of rural life and agriculture, yet they are sometimes ignored
as ubiquitous emblems of the pastoral landscape. This farm includes a gambrel roofed barn on the left and a gable roofed barn on the right. The gambrel design represents an innovation that increased capacity for hay storage. The broken fence and grey walls of these barns lend a worn quality to the landscape, perhaps suggesting the diminishment of the family farm and
its nostalgic associations.
