Ed Hardy studied with Gifu Horihide, a horimono (traditional Japanese-style) tattooist, and incorporated a variety of Japanese-inspired designs into his work. The interaction of Eastern and Western tattooing practices was not one-sided. As American tattooists looked to horimono for new inspiration, Japanese tattooists experimented with American tattooing methods and motifs as well. The concepts of cultural sharing and layering are present in
this etching—a red snake and gorilla cover a woman in blue surrounded by waves.
