In 1959, Robert Natkin moved to New York where he was immersed in Abstract Expressionism and color field painting, which would come to define his style. In the mid 1960s, Natkin began his Apollo series of paintings, which all incorporated vertical strips of contrasting colors. These paintings emphasized color and light and were therefore named for the Greek god of the sun. It is not clear whether this painting was a part of that series, but it uses the same approach and themes.
