Archive Label 2003:
This drawing is very close to Nagajuban seen on the left. It is rare to find preparatory drawings so close to the final print because the last sketch was laid on the block and destroyed during carving. There is a more finished drawing of a woman dressed in a carefully described kimono on the reverse. The efficient use of the paper - two drawings on the front and one on the reverse - suggest that this is a page from Goyo’s sketchpad.

This sketch of a nude and preparatory drawing for Nagajuban were signed and sealed by the artist and dated Taisho 9.8 or August, 1920, two months after Nagajuban was published. Either Goyo- continued to work on this theme or, a more likely scenario, as his health failed his heirs urged him to sign, seal and date his work, including his sketches. Goyo-’s work brought high prices and his signature would have added to the commercial value of these drawings.
