Brosseau Center for Learning: Centenarians

In 1922, Avis Chitwood settled in Topeka where she spent 12 years in an arts and crafts shop perfecting her watercolor technique and ceramic decoration. She studied and taught at Washburn College, and continued studies in art and architecture at the University of Kansas, where she taught etching to adults. Chitwood also worked as an artist for the Kansas State Highway Commission from 1948 to 1974.

In 1941, Chitwood and Margaret Whittemore traveled across Kansas sketching birds, wildflowers, and other points of interest. Their work became screen prints and lithographs. She was still drawing up to the end of her life.
