This portrait by Italian-born American artist Umberto Romano depicts Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616), the famed author of Don Quixote. Unlike the neighboring painting by Pierre Daura, which celebrates Cervantes’s work, Romano sought to capture the magnificence of the man himself. This work was made as part of Romano’s Great Men series, which represented the faces of great men in history painted in bold, dark colors and abstracted styles on a large scale.
