Archive Label 2003:
Lasansky is best known as a professor of printmaking and a reviver of engraving. Engraving was a dying technique by the twentieth century, but Lasansky made it his primary mode of creation and became a master of the medium. Lasansky emphasizes his mastery of this technique by using it for a self-portrait. The heavily engraved lines and the stippling serve not only to define his physique but also to define him symbolically as an artist.
