Mobile Memory

Decorated with colorful doodles, this envelope is part of a lively exchange between Chicago-based artist H. C. Westermann and Kansas City sculptor Richard Hollander. The envelope once held an irreverent note in Westermann’s distinct handwriting, a work that is also part of the Spencer’s permanent collection. During his lifetime, Westermann corresponded with hundreds of people through letters, drawings, and prints mailed in illustrated envelopes such as this one. In light of today’s electronic communication, Westermann’s handwritten letter offers a glimpse into a highly creative and more personalized mode of connecting.
