Milton Rogovin began his career as an optometrist. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Army. A few years after being discharged, Rogovin was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee because of his past affiliation with the Communist Party USA. He was unjustly discredited for the views he held in the 1930s, and this experience inspired his turn to photography as a means of social documentary expression.
