Street Nihonga: The Art of Jimmy Tsutomu Mirikitani

These photographs further showcase Mirikitani’s ability to create large-scale paintings and portray Buddhist deities, underscoring his expertise in Nihonga. They were taken while Mirikitani was at Seabrook Farms in New Jersey and in New York. After Tule Lake closed in March 1946, he was first sent to the Crystal City Alien Enemy Detention Facility in Texas and then to Seabrook Farms in New Jersey, where he labored until October 1947 under “relaxed internment.” These photographs indicate that he continued to engage in Nihonga practice during a period of challenging political circumstances.
