Jimmy Hoffa was a labor activist and union leader who became the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (the ‘IBT’ or ‘Teamsters’). Under his leadership, the Teamsters became the largest labor union in the United States. However, because of his connections to and dealings with organized crime, Hoffa was convicted of fraud, attempted bribery, and jury tampering during his tenure as president of the Teamsters. He served four years in prison before he was pardoned by President Nixon in 1971. Four months after this article’s publication in 1975, Hoffa disappeared under mysterious circumstances. He was declared legally dead in 1982, although his body has never been found.
